Marriage of Vortigern and Rowena daughter of Hengist
From an original engraving after William Hamilton (1751-1801) From the Hume & Stafford history of England published circa 1868. The probably mythical Vortigern and Rowena were the subjects of one of the most famous Shakespeare forgeries by William Henry Ireland. Quickly exposed as a fake. Its first performance was on the 2nd of April 1796 and it closed the same night amid audience derision.
