THE SUBURBANITE Americas Oldest Railroad The Switchback at Mauch Chunk theFirst Line Constructed 0 \F the thousands who every sum-mer enjoy the wonderfullybeautiful ride over the Switch-back Railroad (officially knownas the Mauch Chunk, Summit Hill andSwitchback Railroad) not many knowthat it is the oldest railroad in America,having been opened in May, 1827. The Mauch Chunk road was built toconnect the mines of the Lehigh Coal& Navigation Co. on Summit Hill withthe Lehigh River, nine miles historical account explains that thetransportation of coal is done by grav-ity, the empty wagons being returnedto the mines by mules which ride downwith coal. The arrangement is entirelynovel in its character and enables themules to make two and a half tripsto the Summit and back, thus travelingabout forty miles each day.
