I was glad to hear from you and the folks in general I am not very stout now nor have not been since I wrote to you before we left Rolla on the 23 of Jan and after marching through mud and rain and snow and ice and evry thing you can think of we got to this place on the first of feb we had to lay by one day on account of the snow which fell about six inches dee[p] we intend to whip old price out of Mo if our office[rs] will let us this is an awfull hard winter her it snowed all day yesterday and sleeted all night last night we are allmost on top of the ozark mountains here we have not been paid any money since the first of novb novemeber we expected to get paid of the first of January but did not get a cent I would have had a little money to answer my purpose but I loaned it out and now the boys cant get it any more than I can this is a hard place to write and I paper scarce so I cannot write much I would like to see you all first rate but that is out of the question if you can send me afew stamps without it being to much trouble it would be a great accomodation I have Just five cents and I will try and send this note with it I am a going to hunt the company through for a stamp I have not saw a news paper since I left Rolla that is the hardest rub on me yet our picked Guard amounts to 800 men all the time now I expect we will move on towards Springfield in 3 or 4 days tell my wife I am well I would write to her if if I had any stamps John N Moulton Title: Letter signed John N.
