This image may not be used to state or imply NOAA endorsement of any company or product Extremophile shrimp. Close-up of a group of shrimp living at the summit of the West Mata underwater volcano. These shrimp are able to tolerate the extreme temperatures and other hostile conditions caused by the erupting volcano. West Mata was discovered in May 2009 and is the deepest erupting volcano yet discovered. It lies 4000 feet ( kilometres) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, in an area bounded by Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.
