(Method of Strauss.) It is possible that in the treatment of ulcer of the duodenum this methodmay come to supplant gastroenterostomy. Strauss claims that it takes lessskill, causes less shock, and can be done quicker. 776 SURGICAL TREATMENT The treatment of shock in cases of gastroplasty, pylorectomy, gastrec-tomy, and gastroenterostomy is important. The preliminary treatment ofthese cases has been described (pages 499, 564). If the patient has notbeen able to take sufficient fluids, the body fluids should be increased by theproctoclysis for two days previous to operation. The washing of the stom-
