He is a prominentMason, being a member of St. Johns LodgeNo. 9, at Seattle, Wash., of which he is pastmaster, and was presented with an honorary mem-bership for being the oldest past master in thelodge. Mendenhall is a pioneer of California,and as such has passed through the hardshipsand dang-ers which were of a necessity the warpand woof of its present greatness. Mr. Menden-hall comes of a New England family whosemembers were prominent in the colonial historyof our country. His father, William Mendenhall,was born in 1794 in Tennessee, and following theexample of his forefathers, served in the warof 1812. He married in
