View NNW of the main chamber of Cuween Hill Neolithic chambered cairn, Mainland, Orkney, showing entrances to the W (L), NW & NE (R) side chambers. The passage enters the main chamber at the SE (rear R of the camera position) & there is a 4th side chamber at the S. This Maes Howe type of passage grave in a round cairn dates from the 3rd millennium BC. As well as the remains of at least 8 human interments, many animal bones (ox, small horse, birds) came from the filling of the tomb including the skulls of 24 dogs (possibly totem animals) placed on the floor of the main chamber.
