Swabbing toe amputation site for bacteria. Close up of the left foot of an 81-year-old male patient after amputation of the big toe. The site is being swabbed for microbiology tests. The patient has peripheral vascular disease (PVD). PVD impairs circulation to the extremities, making them susceptible to ulceration and infection, with poor healing. This can lead to gangrene and may necessitate amputation. The amputation site was shown to be infected with MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) and proteus mirabilis.
