Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Icefield, which is shared with Chile. It is also one of only three Patagonian glaciers that is still advancing and growing. It has a length of some 30 km (19 miles) and surface area of some 250 square kilometres (97 square miles). Its terminus is 5 km (3 miles) wide. Tourists from El Calafate, 78 km (48 miles) to the west, view the glacier from observation walkways/platforms on the Peninsula Magallenes, opposite the terminus, which rises 74 m (240 feet) above the waters of Lake Argentino's Canal de Los Tempanos ('Channel of the Ice-bergs').
