View SW of a cement & red sandstone statue of St Aidan, made in 1958 by sculptress Kathleen Parbury, standing in St Mary's Churchyard, Holy Island, Northumberland, England, UK. Irish monk Aidan moved from Iona in AD634 to become the first bishop & abbot of Lindisfarne & apostle to the Northumbrians. The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, immediately W of Lindisfarne Priory (L), is late C12th & C13th incorporating earlier masonry. There is a Norman chancel arch & 3 Norman arches on the N side of the nave. The present church is mainly late C13th Early English including the long chancel. The bellcote on the nave was added in 1723. The church was restored in 1860 after a long period of disrepair. Kathleen Parbury died in 1986 & is buried in the churchyard.
