Hawai‘i, Lana‘i, Formerly the Pineapple Isle, Four Seasons Hotel Lanai at Koele Orchid Greenhouse, Cattleya Orchid
Lana‘i was formerly nicknamed "The Pineapple Isle" because of the extensive pineapple cultivation on the island — at one time it was the largest pineapple plantation in the world with 20,000 pineapple-producing acres and over one thousand workers and their families. In my opinion, Lana‘i pineapple was the tastiest grown anywhere but sadly, it became non-cost-effective and production was shifted to other parts of the world. Now Lana‘i maintains only about 100 acres under cultivation to supply the needs of island residents. The Four Seasons Hotel Lanai has an orchid green house on property that open to guests. Here is a beautiful two-tone purple Cattleya.
