The Portuguese epic poet Luis de Camoes (1524?-1580) is considered the greatest figure of Portuguese literature. The voyage of Portuguese explorer and navigator Vasco Da Gama is the main theme of his epic Os Lusiadas, which is modeled on Vergil's Aeneid and influenced by Ariosto. Camoes also wrote sonnets and other lyrics. The book dates to 1906.
