Subungual haematoma. This is a blood clot beneath a nail, usually the result of a crush injury to the nail. Blood accumulates in the space between the nail and the nail bed, causing pain. If the nail bed is severely damaged then the nail may fall off. If it does not, the clot is generally drained by lancing a hole in the nail using a hot needle.
