During the last six weeks ])rices for red and sweet clover and alfalfa seed have continued to tumble, but alsike clover prices have held their own and have even shown a gain in some sec- tions, according to information obtained by the bureau of markets of the United States Department of Agriculture. Seedsmen are in no hurry to buy and it still is diflQcult for them to secure loans from banks for purchasing seed. Several seedsmen have failed and others have tottered largely because of the un- precedented decline in jirices of field seeds, particularly clover and alfalfa. The marked drop in seed values may be accounted for in a large measure by the general price declines being ex- perienced by other ccniurifidities. Ex- ports and imports of these seeds since July 1 have been of little signifieaiice. There is no world shortage of red clover seed nor curtailed sujiiily of alsike clover seed to duoy up tlic market, as there was two years ago. On the con- trary, fairly large carryovers of red cliiver, sweet clover and alfalfa seed, resulting from unusually large iniimrts during the late winter iiioiillis of last year and the early spring niontlis of this year, have had a depressing effect upon the market.
