The types of sea bottom usually metwith may be arranged in a descending series beginningwith rock and passing through stones, gravel, sand andgravel, pure sand and muddy sand, to mud, varied bythe occurrence of beds of dead shells or of the calcareousalga usually known as coral (Lithothamnian). Inany given district it is usual to find that each of theabove-named types of bottom has its own specialfauna, and that many species seem to recognize a moreminute subdivision than man, whose observations are 17 258 ANIMALS OF THE SEA FLOOR.
