Petrol Bomb Melts Crater in Iceberg. A petroleum incendiary bomblet pocket in an iceberg 450 ft. long, 150 ft. high about water off Virgin Rocks in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, by Coast Guard UF-20 plane leaves a trail of smoke as it burns a crater in the ice. The bomblet, carried in a 1,000-pound cluster type bomb enclosing many petrol bomblets, was released from the plane at an altitude of 800 ft. and speed of 120 knots. A fuse setting detonated the case 50 ft. above the berg. Petrol bombs burn on ice with great flames and smoke. Thermate bombs which produced greater heat than the petrol type were also dropped on iceberg targets during the Ice Patrol's June tests. These smoked little but blasted huge flames on ice lasting as long as 18 minutes. Though the bombs caused no spectacular destruction some effect was observed. One large berg shifted 15 to 20 degrees on its axis. Another berg calved off the section hit by two thermate bombs within two days after the bombing. The purpose of the Ice Patrol's controlled bomb tests was to determine whether intense heat of bombs would hasten breaking and melting of bergs. Bergs have never been destroyed other than by melting during their voyage south from the mother glacier but some survive long enough to endanger shipping lanes. The Ice Patrol since its beginning in 1916 has tried different ways of combating the ice menace.
