Leon Dufourmentel (1884-1957), French surgeon. Dufourmentel was a specialist in reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. During World War I, he worked with soldiers whose faces had been disfigured by shellfire injuries. One of the pioneering methods he used was to take a flap of skin from elsewhere on the head and graft it onto the wound that was being treated. This technique is known as a Dufourmentel flap. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
