A female Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), carrying babies in her pouch, crouches in a tree, April 9, 2023, in Coden, Alabama. The Virginia opossum is the only species of opossum found in the United States and Canada. Opossums are small to medium-sized marsupials that tend to be solitary and nomadic. Mother opossums such as this one can give birth to as many as 20 young, carrying them in their pouch until they are ready to be weaned. Their lifespans are unusually short, with most opossums only living one to two years. (Photo by Carmen K. Sisson/Cloudybright)
