Young men dressed in First World War uniforms in Aberystwyth Wales as part of a UK-wide project to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, which started on this day exactly 100 years ago. Across the UK some 2000 men are appearing in silent tableau on the streets of towns handing out cards with the name and regiment of the soldier they represented and his age when he died on 1 July 1916 Commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, the work was conceived by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller with Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre.
