An advert for a pink bathroom suite made by Armitage Ware. The advert appeared in an Australian magazine in 1963. Pink became one of the iconic colours of the 1950s. Seen in fashion as well as bathrooms and kitchens. Part of its appeal was down to Mamie Eisenhower, America's first lady from 1953 to 1961. Pink was Mamie’s favourite colour and had a shade named after her. The trend continued into the 1960s when coloured bathroom suites were common. White was considered boring - other colours were pastel shades of blue, turquoise, green and yellow. Later in the decade came darker colours, especially brown and avocado. Coloured bathrooms have a retro appeal and are now being saved from being taken out and are even being restored.
