Each flower springs from the axil of a ELEJIEXTS OF STRUCTURAL Fig. 85. leaf-like bract, and is apparently raised on a pedicel. What seems to be a pedicel, however, will, if cut across,prove to be the ovary, which in this case isinferior. Its situation is similar to the situ-ation of the ovary in Willow-herb, and, asin that flower, so in this the calyx-tube ad-heres to the whole surface of the ovary, andthe three outer divisions of the perianth aresimply upward extensions of this tube.
