Protesters Demand Closure of School of the Americas

Columbus, Georgia - Thousands of people rallied at the gates of Fort Benning, demanding the closure of the School of the Americas, where the United States military trains Latin American combat soldiers. Graduates of the School have been implicated in torture and murder in their home countries, and led the 2009 military coup in Honduras. Still popularly called the School of the Americas, it has been officially renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Participants in the rally carried crosses bearing the names of victims of SOA graduates.
