The entrance to this harbor is not more than three orfour hundred yards wide. There is a deep channel lead-ing into the inner harbor, which requires some skill in 96 RETURN FROM SAN FRANCISCO navigating; but. when once the entrance is passed,there is an abundance of water. I saw large shipssome six miles within this harbor, and was informedthat the Pacific mail steamers, and one of our frigates,had also been there. An accurate survey has latelybeen made by the United States Coast Survey andelaborate maps published with the soundings and allthe bearings laid down, to
