Once again Sumners gallant men charged across a rail-road cut. running down one side and up the other, and stillagain attempted to escape in the same manner, but each timethey were forced to retire precipitately by a murderous firefrom the Confederate batteries. Not only was the Confed-erate fire disastrous upon the approach and the successiverepulses by the foe, but it also inflicted great damage uponthe masses of the Federal army in front of Maryes OFFICERS OF THE FAMOUS IRISH BRIGADE The Irish Brigade (consisting of the Twenty-eighth Massachusetts, Sixty-third, Sixty-ninthand Eighty-eighth New York and the One Hundred and Sixteenth Pennsylvania) was com-manded by General Thomas F. Meagher and advanced in Hancocks Division to the first assaultat Maryes Heights, on December 13, lSGi. In this charge the Irish soldiers moved steadily upthe ridge until within a few yards of a sunken road, from which unexpected fire mowed themdown. Of the 1,315 men which Meagher led into battle, 545 fell in that charge. The officerstand-ing is Colonel Patrick Kelly,o the Eighty-eighth Xew York, who was one of the valiant heroes ofthis charge, and succeeded to the command of the Iri h Brigade after General Meagher. Hewas killed at Petersburg. The officer seated is Captain Clooney, of the same regiment, whowas killed
