The cliffs and foreshore at St Margaret's Bay, St Margaret's at Cliffe, Kent
St Margaret's at Cliffe is a small village located near to Dover in kent. On the top of these cliffs stands the memorial to the Dover Patrol. The Dover Patrol was a Royal navy command of the first world war charged with the task of preventing enemy shipping, but particularly submarines from accessing the Atlantic Ocean via the English Channel. It also undertook a range of other duties, including escort work. The patrol operated a wide range of ships from warships to armed trawlers, plus aircraft. Its most notable operation was the Zeebrugge raid of April 1918. The foreshore and cliffs depicted in the photograph are located immediately adjacent to the beach at St Margaret's Bay which is frequently used by swimmers attempting to swim the English Channel.
