A pupil of Girardon, Robert le Lorrain, has left us a charming example of decorative sculpture. In his famous group of horses at a drinking trough, over a former stable door of the Hotel de Rohan, he has trans-lated the airy vivacity of painting into stone with admirable skill (Fig. 495). Coysevox was continued in the work of his pupils, the brothers Nicolas and Guillaume Coustou. The latter in particular assimilated thetrenchant precision of his horses of Marly express a vigor-ous vitality in forms carved by agraceful chisel. The line is sharp andnervous; from this time forth sculp-ture, even when it aims at rhetoricalpomp, will not allow brilliant ana in-cisive detail to be lost in common-place rotundities (Figs. 496, 497). Painters were obliged to conformto the exigencies of the new style ofdecoration. The lightness of fashion-able rooms put
