In a very valuable work issued by Steinway & Sons inrelation to the historical growth of the American piano-forte, during the progress of the Centennial Exhibitionin 1876, I further find this reference to Babcock : Inthe year 1825 Alpheus Babcock, of Philadelphia, wasgranted a patent for the construction of a cast-iron ringsomewhat resembling the shape of a harp in a squarepiano, for the purpose of increasing its power of resist-ance to the pull of the strings.
