Kvaløya is Norway's fifth largest island and creates a mountainous defence between Tromsø and the Atlantic Ocean. The southern side of the island is green and fertile, while the outermost part provides a weather-beaten coastal landscape. In the centre of the island, alpine peaks rise more than 1000 metres up from the fiords.
