Jellyfish. Phosphorescent jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca. On mechanical stimulation, such as that caused by the wake of a ship, this jellyfish glows brightly. The jellyfish paralyses its prey with stinging cells (nematocysts) on the eight highly elastic tentacles that are here extended below its umbrella (top centre). Its umbrella can grow to 8 cm in diameter. P. noctiluca lives in the Mediterranean Sea and the warmer parts of the Atlantic Ocean, where they are often found in shoals, largely drifting with the currents. Jellyfish are primitive creatures whose bodies are mostly composed of water. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
