Local woman picking up Harvesting Seaweed and mollusks during low tide, Zanzibar, Tanzania. In Zanzibar, a significant rise in sea temperatures is killing algae cultivation. Algae farming is the second economic engine of Zanzibar, soaps and cosmetic products produced with them are distributed all over the world. It is estimated that some 25,000 people make a living from the seaweed industry in Zanzibar and of these, 90% are women. For some time some algae have undergone color changes and many of them die. What was initially thought to be a disease has turned out to have an even more serious explanation: climate change. The warming of the water is putting at risk the survival of the crops and, therefore, the economy of the island.
