A late 19th Century illustration of boats on the Adige River as it runs through Verona, a city in Veneto, Italy. In 1164 Verona joined with Vicenza, Padua and Treviso to create the Veronese League, which integrated with the Lombard League in 1167 to battle against Frederick I Barbarossa. Victory was achieved at the Battle of Legnano in 1176, and the Treaty of Venice signed in 1177 followed by the Peace of Constance in 1183. It also became the location of William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet".
