Srinagar, 17 December 2019. The historic Jamia Masjid reopens for prayers for the first time since the Kashmir Valley’ semi-autonomous status was revoked by the central government on August 5. The Jamia mosque was built at the end of the 14th century and it has been an important spiritual centre in Kashmir as well as an important site for political discourse about the region. It has also been a hub for pro-freedom (Hurriyat Conference) parties and separatist politics within the Kashmir conflict. The mosque was closed for prayers by the Indian authorities following the abrogation of Article 370
