SINKING OF THE SCHARNHORST. 1 JANUARY 1944, SCAPA FLOW. ON 26 DECEMBER 1943, ONE OF GERMANY'S FEW GREAT WARSHIPS, THE 26,000 TO SCHARNHORST, WAS SUNK BY UNITS OF THE HOME FLEET. THE SCHARNHORST WAS ATTEMPTING TO INTERCEPT A RUSSIAN-BOUND CONVOY WHEN SHE WAS DRIVEN OFF, CHASED, AND FINALLY DESTROYED OFF THE NORTH CAPE.
