The Drum Sculpture at Glenravel, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

"The Drum" name comes from the winding wheel used in the 19th century iron ore works just above here on Slievenanee mountain. The Woodland Trust bought this 25 acre site in 2001. Over 14000 native trees have been planted here and the path that this photograph was taken from winds down to the remains of the winding gear, old cottage, distillery and loading bay for the narrow gauge railway that ran from Fisher Town (now called Cargan) to Ballymena (between 1875 and 1937). This Sculpture was created by Ned Smyth to represent the connection between the people, the past and this new treescape for Glenravel.
