The Hambach opencast mine (Tagebau) is the largest mine operated by RWE Power AG (formerly Rheinbraun AG) for the extraction of "brown coal" or lignite. The Lower Rhine Basin is the largest single lignite deposit in the world, with an original content of around 55 billion tons.
