The city of Oakland, California , USA as it was in the mid 1800's. It is now the largest city and the county seat of Alameda County, California. The area was originally covered in large oak forests, hence the name. Up to 1908 thousands of people contracted the plague or were held in quarantine. A smaller epidemic broke out in 1919, thought to have been started by a hunter eating an infected squirrel. In 1906, the city's population doubled by refugees made homeless after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake .
