Although family had been in good circum-stances, when he was 17 years old he was thrownuiwn hisown resources, .\fter taking the usual pre-liminary studies, and teaching school to obtain themeans, he entered Dickinson College, at Carlisle,Penn., from which he graduated among the first inhis class, in 1829.
