This long experience in mercantile affairs prepared Mr. Nortonto oversee and direct many forms of business, and his services werein general demand at Westfield. He became director and treasurerof the Hampden Cigar Company, in 1857, for two years, and actedfor several years as director of the American Whip was president and director of the United States Whip Companyfor the first three years after its organization in 1893. He waspresident and director of the Westfield Gas Light Company for. ,-,; e,^-y,a^, ^Sra Jvry 4jtfk LEWIS RUFUS NORTON several years; and was chosen by the Legislature as State directorof the Boston and Albany Railroad Company, from 1874 to was director of the Hampden National Bank, and its presidentfor nineteen years. Mr. Norton during the years 1862, 1872 and 1873 was a memberof the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and previous tothis, from 1856 to 1862 served as town treasurer and collector ofWestfield.
