On arriving at theplace, they were received and entertained with great cordi-ality, and the boy was returned to them safe, and happy inthe possession of a quantity of Indian ornaments. Thusthe freak of the scape-grace of the colony, though caus-ing considerable anxiety and inconvenience, ended mostagreeably. In August, a rumor was circulated that trouble wasbrewing between Massasoit and Corbitant.* Squanto andHobomak were immediately dispatched to learn the truthregarding it. » Corbitant was chief of the Pocassets, and for a while unfriendly to THE PILGRIM FATHERS. 343 On reaching the village of Namasket, they were seized byCorbitant, and threatened with death. Hobomak escaped,and fled with all haste to Plymouth with the news thatMassasoit and Squanto were both prisoners; whereuponCaptain Standish Took from the nail on the wall his sword with its scabbard of the belt round his waist, and with ten picked men, started to the rescue. Theymarched all day in the rain, and at night lost their wayin the woods, and wandered around for hours, but finallyreached the village, and beseiged the house where theysupposed Corbitant to be. The inmates attempted torun away, and were fired upon, and two or three werewounded. Corbitant, however, had fled. Massasoit was atliberty, and Squanto was found all right in one of thehouses.
