The former palace of the archbishops noticeable for its many towers, such as the Gilles Aycelin keep ( late 13th - early 14th century), and the Saint Martial and Madeleine towers (13th century), is made up of the Old Palace, of Romanesque origin, and the New Palace, in the Gothic style remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. It builds on the first wall of Narbonne, behind which lies the palace garden. Since the 19th century, it has housed the hôtel de ville and the Art Museum (in the former apartments), the archaeological museum (a wing of the Old Palace). Together with the cathedral of Saint-Just and Saint-Pasteur, the Episcopal Palace constitutes the key monument of the town of Narbonne. Narbonne, Occitan: Narbona, Latin: Narbo is a commune in southern France in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. It lies 849 km from Paris in the Aude department, of which it is a sub-prefecture. Once a prosperous port, and a major city in Roman times, it is now located about 15 km from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is marginally the largest commune in Aude, although the prefecture is the slightly smaller commune of Carcassonne.
