Much of northeast China should be characterized by extensive grasslands, but much has been lost to urban sprawl, industrialization and oil exploration. Those that remain are vital breeding grounds for a host of bird species increasingly threatened with extinction, such Japanese and white-naped cranes. This image shows grassland inside the Zhalong Nature Reserve, nr the city of Qiqihar, where a number of white-naped cranes have been successfully bred in captivity and then released.
