Wrong-ly suspected of disloyalty at the outbreakof the war, Connnander Porters conductduring the struggle gave the lie to suchcalumny. He recovered after Fort Henry,and was made Commodore in July, \gain in command of the Essex he at-tcni[)ted unsuccessfully to destroy thedread Confederate ram Arlia?isas at Yicks-bm-g on July 22d. Porter and the Essexthen joined Farraguts fleet.
