Your Jack has heard, too, that in Monterey,California, there are three pine-trees called theHutterfly trees because for at least twelve yearsthey have been covered almost all the time withlive butterflies. The trees measure about eighteeninches through the trunk, and they bear quite asmany butterflies as they have leaves. It may be that these particular trees give out an. odor or yield a sap which the butterflies like verymuch ; but my birds have not told me yet aboutthis, and perhaps one of you youngsters will be thefirst to explain to me why butterflies are attractedin such numbers to these curious perching-places.
