Huge chunks of peat eroded from the side of the Upper Esk by extreme flooding in the Lake District, UK. The moorland peat is a huge carbon sink, which releases its stored carbon when damaged. This is a classic example of a climate change feedback loop. Flooding, more frequent as a result of climate change, is releasing yet more carbon, thus further increasing climate change.
