Nuclear reactor core, abstract image. The core of a nuclear reactor contains rods of nuclear fuel (here, uranium) which undergo nuclear fission, releasing large amounts of energy and radiation. This research nuclear reactor is submerged in several metres of cooling water, resulting in a blue glow called Cerenkov radiation that is emitted when energetic charged particles travel faster through water than light. Nuclear reactors are used in research to study the effects of radiation on materials, and for the production of rare and valuable medical and industrial isotopes.
