The Kitchell genealogy says ofBaxter Sayre: Deacon (he was a member of the Presbyterian Church) BaxterSayre was a man of great force and fervor of character, a zealous Christian, and abold champion of the Temperance and Anti-Slavery reforms in that early stage ofconflict and obloquy that needed and produced heroes. Even before the greatdebate began, his tender conscience led him to emancipate his slaves in NewJersey, and when the conflict came, he was in it with clean hands and a wholeheart.
