MODEL RELEASED. Gastric band surgery wounds on the abdomen of a 45 year old women. Gastric bands are used to treat obesity. The band is placed around the top portion of the stomach, creating a small pouch. When the patient eats, the pouch fills up quickly and a full message is sent to the brain, helping the patient to eat smaller portions. The band also slows the release of food to the rest of the stomach and intestines, increasing the period of time the patient feels full for. This procedure carries fewer risks than other surgical treatments such as gastric stapling.
