Lion's Mane mushroom on old log. Virginia, USA

The Lion's Mane mushroom is considered a choice edible when young and is reported to taste like seafood when cooked. The mushroom is reputed to have healing properties and is used as a medicinal substance in Chinese medicine. Some of the compounds derived from it are thought to be anti-oxidants. In the far east it is used in treatments ranging from esophageal cancer to dementia. The compounds threitol, D-arabinitol, and palmitic acid are free radical scavengers and are thought to help regulate blood lipids and may reduce blood glucose levels. Studies have also shown extracts to stimulate nerve growth factor as well as myelination and this has led to scientists proposing it as a possible treatment for Alzheimers. It is frequently sold in asian grocery stores.
