He subsequently commanded a division of cavalry at thebattle of Nashville, was brevetted brigadier-general in the regulararmy, March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services, and atthe same time major-general U. S. A. for his services in the fieldduring the war, and he remained on the stafif of Gen. Thomas asprovost-marshal and judge-advocate of the military district of theTennessee until 1866, when he was mustered out of the volunteerservice.
