The rifamycins are a group of antibiotics which are synthesized either naturally by the actinomycete bacterium, Amycolatopsis mediterranei (formerly known as Streptomyces mediterranei), or artificially. Rifamycins are particularly effective against mycobacteria, and are therefore used to treat leprosy, tuberculosis, and mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. The rifamycin group includes the following drugs: Rifamycin A, Rifamycin B, Rifamycin C, Rifamycin D, Rifampicin, Rifabutin, Rifapentine. Magnification: x25 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
